This Event was organized by the Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII and co-sponsored by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations and Specialized Agencies, the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Reseau International des Droits Humains (RDHI) and Peace Brigades International (PBI).
The purpose of the parallel event is to present an example of international solidarity at grass- roots level based on the experience of the nonviolent peace operators of Operation Dove, the APG23 peace corps, in the Occupied Palestinians territories, Albania and Colombia as well of Peace Brigade International (PBI), an other NGO with which APG23 cooperates closely.
The parallel event is organised in the context of the work of the “Independent Expert on Human Rights and International Solidarity” on the preparation of a draft declaration on the right of peoples and individuals to international solidarity. It would like also to make the connections between international solidarity and right to peace by showing how the presence of peace operators in zones of conflict or in countries where gross human rights violations and tensions exist, becomes an instrument for monitoring human rights violations, reducing tensions between opponents, promoting peace through dialogue and by facilitating the nonviolent resolution of conflicts.
