The cause for beatification begins at the public session held in the Church of the Resurrection in Rimini. The cause is presided over by Father Giuseppe Tognacci as judge, Elisabetta Casadei and the postulator and Victorino Casas Llana as Promoter of Justice. 100 witnesses are to be called in a cause expected to last two or three years. The first witness is Father Romano Migani, co-founder of the parish of the Resurrection, with Father Oreste Benzi, Father Elio Piccari and Father Sisto Ceccarini. The witness statements are to be collected in the coming sessions which will be closed hearings. The next public session will mark the completion of the diocesan phase of the cause.

The Bishop of Rimini, Francesco Lambiasi, makes public the decree launching the cause, dated 8 April 2014. From that moment on, Father Benzi may be called a Servant of God.

The opinion in favour of the cause arrives from the Episcopal Conference of Emilia-Romagna.

The go-ahead arrives from the Congregation for the Causes for Saints.

The postulator Elisabetta Casadei delivers the formal request to open the cause to the Bishop of Rimini Francesco Lambiasi, after a year of research into Father Benzi’s “hunger for sanctity”, supported by a great many letters, including from 9 cardinals, 41 from Italian bishops and 11 from non-Italian bishops and archbishops, in addition to those from many ecclesiastical movements.

At the end of the Conference entitled Father Oreste Benzi, a Witness and Prophet for the Challenges of Times, in the name of the Pope John XXIII Community, Giovanni Ramonda, President of the Community, delivers the Bishop of Rimini, Mons. Francesco Lambiasi, the request to launch the cause for canonisation.
